Kasus or case is a system used in German grammar to mark the functions of nouns in a sentence. To start with, you are learning just the nominative and accusative cases (Nominativ und Akkusativ).
The nominative marks the subject of the sentence (i.e. the person or thing carrying out the action of the verb), while the accusative marks the object (i.e. the person or thing that is acted on).
Zum Beispiel:
Ist das ein Tisch?
=> Ein Tisch is here the subject and is in the nominative case.
Ich nehme einen Tee.
=> Einen Tee is here the subject and is in the accusative case. The subject in this sentence is ich.
Nominativ | Akkusativ | |
Maskulinum | (k)ein | (k)einen * |
Femininum | (k)eine | (k)eine |
Neutrum | (k)ein | (k)ein |
Plural | keine | keine |
* Only the masculine article (k)ein changes in the accusative to (k)einen. The other articles are the same in Nominativ and Akkusativ.
