Kasus or case is a system used in German grammar to mark the functions of nouns in a sentence. To start with, you are learning just the nominative and accusative cases (Nominativ und Akkusativ).
The nominative marks the subject of the sentence (i.e. the person or thing carrying out the action of the verb), while the accusative marks the object (i.e. the person or thing that is acted on).
Zum Beispiel:
Der Mann trinkt den Cappuccino.
=> Der Mann is here the subject (i.e. the person drinking) and is in the nominative case, while den Cappuccino is the object (i.e. the thing that is being drunk) and in the accusative case. The masculine article der changes to den in the accusative.
Nominativ | Akkusativ | |
Maskulinum | der | den * |
Femininum | die | die |
Neutrum | das | das |
Plural | die | die |
* Only the masculine article der changes in the accusative to den. The other articles are the same in Nominativ and Akkusativ.
