These prepositions are used to give the locations of things:

1. in -- in, inside
2. an -- at, on (vertical surfaces)
3. auf -- on (horizontal surfaces)
4. neben -- next to, beside
5. vor -- in front of
6. hinter -- behind
7. über -- over
8. unter -- under
9. zwischen -- between

They are usually combined with the verbs "sein", "liegen", stehen" und "hängen" to state locations (i.e. where something is). When stating locations, these prepositions take the dative case (i.e. the article following them will be in the dative case), e.g.

1. Mein Kursbuch liegt auf dem Tisch (m) / in der Tasche (f) / neben dem Wasser (n).
2. Das Bild hängt an der Wand (f) / zwischen dem Fenster (n) und dem Fernseher (m).
